An 8-point ATS CV checklist

1. Target role

Use the vacancy’s language when it accurately describes your target role.

2. Specific profile

Explain your specialism and experience with facts rather than generic claims.

3. Achievements and projects

Describe real actions and outcomes, not just responsibilities.

4. Keywords in context

Connect relevant tools and skills to activities you can demonstrate.

5. Clear section headings

Use recognisable headings such as Experience, Education, Projects and Skills.

6. Consistent dates

Keep dates, employers and job titles in a consistent format.

7. Extractable text

Check that you can select and copy the document’s text in the intended order.

8. Human review

Read the full CV for mistakes, unnatural keyword repetition and unsupported claims.

Tailor your CV without inventing experience

Read the responsibilities

Separate tools, tasks and expected outcomes. Identify what you can actually demonstrate.

Lead with relevant evidence

Move the strongest matching projects and experience closer to the beginning.

Check the exported file

Open the PDF, copy its text and review order, contact details and dates before submitting.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a universal ATS score?

No. Employers use different systems and criteria. A checklist helps identify problems but cannot guarantee a screening outcome.

Should I copy every keyword from the vacancy?

Only use terms that accurately describe your experience. Repetition without evidence makes your CV harder to read.

Do I need to start a new CV for every job?

Keep a base CV and create versions for different roles. Change the emphasis, not the facts.
